    From ‘la petite Europe vaticane’ to the Club Med: the French Socialist Party and the challenges of European integration

    Studies of the relationship of political parties to the European Community/Union (EC/EU) increasingly use the perspective of ‘Europeanisation’ to measure such relationships. There is also a case, however, for looking at Europe from the perhaps narrower but no less necessary point of view of intra-party dynamics: in particular, what kinds of challenge does ‘Europe’ represent to party managers and how do they deal with it? By analysing the relationship of the Socialist Party to the EC/EU at three key moments in the history of European integration, the author identifies some common tropisms which continue to operate even as the effects of ‘Europeanisation’ increase. Résumé L’analyse du rapport des partis politiques à la Communauté européenne/Union européenne part habituellement du concept d’européanisation afin de saisir la mesure desdits rapports. On est cependant fondé à postuler la nécessité de saisir l’Europe également à travers le prisme, sans doute plus étroit mais non moins nécessaire, de la dynamique interne de parti : à savoir, quel genre de défi l’Europe pose-t-elle aux gestionnaires de parti et comment ces derniers y répondent-ils ? L’analyse du rapport entre la SFIO/PS et l’instance européenne tel qu’il existait à trois moments-clé du processus d’intégration européenne nous permet d’isoler quelques tropismes communs qui continuent à produire leurs effets alors même que s’approfondissent les conséquences de l’européanisation.
