    This article is an introduction to the study of the different policies on the national question implemented in Transylvania through various phases of its contemporary history: the period of Greater Romania, its drifting towards far-rightist dictatorial regimes, the subsequent transitory period of popular democracy and, finally, the early years of consolidation of a Socialist like regime. The aim is that of outlining the evolution of the relations between the State and the Hungarian minority during the distinct chronological epochs and to compare the influence of changes in political hegemony and in the international context on the national question.
