    The essay analyzes the causes of the formation and consolidation of a Catalan identity conceived and represented as different from the Spanish one, and puts them in the process of the construction of the Liberal State. The construction and politicization of modern Catalan identity, far from being something which emerges suddenly with the crisis of ’98, is a consequence of the complex – and never univocal – relation between Spanish nation-building and the modernization of Catalan society, in which the imposition of a single national identity is countered by the scarce capability and lack of interest in integration of the new Liberal State.
