    Sul nazionalismo spagnolo e la questione linguistica (1900-1975)

    The article analyses the role played by language in Spanish nationalism during the 20th century, focusing on the construction of Castilian as an ethnic marker of the Spanish imagined community, as well as on its complex relationship vis-à-vis the linguistic diversity of the Spanish territory. As the hierarchic place of Castilian was challenged by linguistic nationalisms in the periphery, Spanish nationalism tended to reinforce its preference for a culturally homogenised polity, while advocating the return to the 19th century status quo, according to which regional languages were tolerated as far as they remained confined to the limits of “vernacular” literature and the private space.
