    Alla base del regionalismo: la definizione della cultura popolare

    This article analyzes regionalism starting from a series of dichotomies. In the XX century the forms of regionalism that establish a close connection between the People, the Tradition and the Nation play a fundamental role, because the People, especially the rural population in the provinces, is seen as the custodian of the Nation’s heritage. Modern nations thus represent themselves more and more in the double form of unity and diversity, but the popular culture which is promoted is the product of the invention of traditions. Regionalist folklore is recognized as a means to build up social cohesion. However, regionalism can also be used to contest the social order. Despite being an extension of nationalism, it tries to solve some of the problems which the latter brings about. After 1945, though, its ideological plasticity cost him the assimilation to the use fascist regimes had made of it, so that regionalism ended up being discredited for a long time.
