Il principio di nazionalità. Un dibattito nell'Italia risorgimentale
    in Storia e Politica , Anno VI, n. 2 ,  2014
In January 1847 the Jesuit Luigi Taparelli d’Azeglio published a brief theoretical and original essay dealing with the idea of nation - Sulla nazionalità. The essay, which backed some legitimist ideas, seemed to prove the connections between the Jesuits and the Austrian authorities. The treatise was widely read and gave way to a lively political debate. After the revolts of 1848-49 the considerations made by Taparelli were relegated at the margins of the debate. However, the analysis of the principles of the idea of nation continued to be central in the treatises discussing the failure of the “Springtime of Peoples” and in books dealing with the foundations of nations. At the beginning of the 1850s it was significant the Prelezione by Pasquale Stanislao Mancini tha strenghtened to this debate. Taparelli participated to the debate with new essays published in the Jesuit journal La Civiltà Cattolica.
