Il Northen Star: una rivista democratica e internazionale (1845-1848)
in Storia e Politica , Anno IV, n. 3 , 2012
The Northern Star (NS) has often been read as a chartist or radical newspaper, causing an undervaluation of its democratic aspect. The aim of this article is to propose a reading of the NS as a democratic journal. This evaluation allows the reader to follow the political debate on the rise of democracy in Europe that began in 1835 after the English translation of Tocqueville’s Democracy in America, and was revitalized by the arrival of the NS in London at the end of 1844. That debate ended at the beginning of 1848, with the publication of the Communist Manifesto.
