    Ciudadanía y multiculturalismo
    in Storia e Politica , Anno IV, n. 2 ,  2012
The multiculturalism, the cohabitation in the same social space of diverse groups coming from different cultures, when applied in contemporary societies often leads to difficulties, sometimes problematic. The multiculturalism collides with the concept of citizenship in contemporary societies, while also represents an attempt to redefine the concept of citizenship in force. Indeed, the classical liberal democratic state is based on a concept of citizenship which disregards, among others, the cultural and political identity established on the formal status of citizens, with equal rights and duties for all; which does not fit well to the plural and heterogeneous reality of the modern society (multinational and multiethnic), where minority groups ask for the recognition of cultural specificity. These groups demand rights and specific measures in order to preserve the identity of the individual citizens and your full development. This can be understood as a demand to expand the concept of citizenship (citizens considering not only as individuals, but as members of groups), which is difficult to reconcile with the assumptions underlying the classic liberal democratic model citizen. This article addresses this debate, analyzing the various alternatives that different models of citizenship provide to the existence and the challenge of multiculturalism.
