Da internazionalista a «italiano per elezione». Per un bilancio complessivo della riflessione di Roberto Michels sul tema della nazione
    in Storia e Politica , Anno IV, n. 1 ,  2012
For the international success of his “Party Politics” Robert Michels is com-monly considered one of the most authoritative exponents of the theory of the elites and, at the same time, one of the founders of political sociology. The extraordinary success of his masterpiece (1911), however, has not bene-fited from the deepening of his figure and his work. On the contrary, it has largely overshadowed the interest that still deserve some of his other numer-ous writings and particularly those dedicated to the so-called “national ques-tion”. The main aim of this paper is to retrace Michels’ reflection on nation and nationalism in relation to his controversial process of progressive identi-fication with Italy and, at the same time, to reconstruct the main stages of its evolution and to highlight its major contradictions.
