La prensa como instrumento cohesionador de la identidad nacional. La proyección de Cataluña en Cuba
in Hispanic Research Journal: Iberian and Latin American Studies , Volume 15, Issue 6 ,  2014 ,  492-514
The aim of this paper is to analyse and interpret the phenomenon of the press published by Catalan emigrants in America, and to propose as a working hypothesis that it acted as a way of dealing with the feelings of those emigrants’ identity. The hypothesis will be tested by the analysis of a specific case: the publishing of the journal La Llumanera de Nova York in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, which was widespread in the island of Cuba. The newspaper sources, both Catalan and Cuban, have been central to our research as well as consulting the personal collections of emigrants and the archive of the Charitable Society of Catalan Natives in Havana. The result of the research allows us to discover and understand, through the Cuban press itself, how the reality of Catalonia was viewed in Cuba in the early decades of the twentieth century.
