    Economic globalization and the expansion of democracy that have occurred since the second half of the twentieth century have shown the potential economic viability of smaller states than some of the preexisting ones. At the same time, a new generation of nationalist movements, which invoke the principle of democracy but are also aware of the high degree of economic integration required for the prosperity of a small and non self-sufficient jurisdiction, call for a sui generis redefinition of the political relationship between a portion of the citizenry and the rest of it. Therefore, some nationalist movements do not advocate for the establishment of an independent state in accordance with the tenets of classical nationalism, but the enthronement of a new right to decide. In fact, a new right that would endorse an à la carte repudiation of the primeval state. However, if such a project does not defend not only the democratic principle but also the democratically enacted and existing rules, that kind of nationalist proposals do contain more open questions than stable solutions.
