| The book reconstructs the American debates on the process of European integration in its different phases since the end of the Second World War. The research aims at providing two fundamental interpretative paths, resulting from two different ideas of American “exceptionalism”. The first tendency could be defined “defensive-conservative” and consists in magnifying US political system and depreciating the relations with the rest of the world. In this perspective European Union is considered a menace in terms of political and economical competition. An alternative point of view is the “offensive-progressive” one. In this case US federal experiment becomes the “archetype” upon which the international institutions can be framed and consequently European integration reveals itself to be a great opportunity of suggesting the extension of that model to the Old World. |
