How Does the Internationalization of Politics, Society and the Economy Affect Liberal Democracy in Europe? A Problem-Oriented Assessment That internationalization may affect the evolution of liberal democracy in Europe and elsewhere in a positive way marks a prominent assessment. Such evaluations appear justified in particular with regard to the impact of European integration on the development of democracy in Central Eastern Europe. However, the manifestations and effects of growing internationalization of politics, society and the economy have been highly diverse and ambiguous. Among the more problematic effects of internationalization is the challenge it poses to some of the fundamental principles of liberal democracy at the level of European nation states. This paper highlights some of the major internationalization-driven challenges to liberal democracy in Europe, and looks at possible solutions to the structural problems identified.
