DEMOCRATISATION AND DE-DEMOCRATISATION IN EUROPE? A conference of the Renner -Institute Vienna in cooperation with Agora, the Democracy Research Section of the Austrian Political Science Association In the past two decades, the post-war social contract and what it implied in economic and social terms (most of all full employment, social security, etc.) has been terminated, mainly by neo-liberal economic and social policy makers. The resulting political changes in Europe impacted not only on specific policy areas, but beyond that on political systems and the nature of democracy, or more specifically on the quality of democracy. The purpose of the conference was to explore whether and to what extent the quality of democracy has changed in selected European countries (Austria, United Kingdom, Italy and the Czech Republic) and within the European Union at large, in the period between ca 1990 and 2006, which pehenomena and trends of democratisation or de-democratisation can be identified, and how tho generate a "more" of democracy.
